Our Story: The Architecture of Slow Craft
The Antidote to the Modern Factory
Martin and Loom was founded on a quiet conviction: the objects that inhabit our spaces should possess a soul. In an era dominated by high-speed mass production, fast fashion, and synthetic fibers, the modern home has become saturated with the sterile and the disposable. Much of today's textiles and goods are cranked out by automated machinery where efficiency replaces artistry, leaving behind thin, lifeless pieces devoid of identity.
We set out to establish a deliberate alternative. Martin and Loom stands at the intersection of two distinct disciplines: the patient rhythm of the traditional floor loom and the precise, enduring craft of the leather workbench. We source only raw, noble materials to create heirloom pieces rooted in authentic human connection, structural permanence, and timeless utility.
Preserving the Legacy of the Floor Loom
To realize our textiles, we bypassed commercial manufacturing and partnered directly with traditional master weavers in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Recognized for centuries as a global epicenter of textile artistry, Tlaxcala is home to multi-generational artisan families who preserve the honorable, slow art of the wooden floor loom.
Our blankets are never rushed. Instead, every thread is guided by human hands, and every stripe, tension shift, and finish is a deliberate architectural choice. Because of this slow, fully manual process, no two textiles in our collection are identical. Each piece carries subtle nuances in the weave - a living signature of the artisan who crafted it.
Designed for Longevity
We select natural materials engineered by nature to endure. Every blanket in our collection is loomed with a signature composition of 90 percent natural sheep's wool for climate-regulating warmth and 10 percent cotton for structural softness and memory. Following the weave, our textiles undergo a specialized brushing process, a meticulous combing technique that gently coaxes up the natural fibers into a plush, velvety loft that rests easily against the skin.
Whether finished with clean, contemporary tailored bindings or detailed with traditional hand-tied tassels, these mid-weight pieces are designed to bring a quiet, grounded warmth to modern spaces. Together with our bench-crafted leather goods, they are built to anchor your home today and be passed down for generations.
Thank you for choosing slow textiles, deliberate craftsmanship, and the preservation of multi-generational artisan heritage.
